Durkwa Empowers Women on Poultry and Organic Farming, Targets Sustainable Income for Households

In a bid to promote women’s economic independence and strengthen household livelihoods, over 50 women have benefitted from an empowerment initiative focused on backyard poultry and organic spice farming, spearheaded by Dr. Ishaya Inuwa Durkwa.

The programme, led by community mobilizer Abdurrahman Abubakar Mubarak, aims to equip 600 women in each of the 21 local governments with the knowledge and resources needed to engage in poultry and organic farming, including turmeric, ginger, and garlic.

Mubarak noted that the beneficiaries will be registered as a cluster to boost structured production and enable future export opportunities.

This initiative is designed to support women and ensure sustainable self-reliance.

“We already have offtakers ready to buy their produce,” Mubarak said, commending Durkwa for his consistent commitment to grassroots development”

Representing Dr. Durkwa, Barnabas Telma, Personal Assistant, encouraged the beneficiaries to take the business seriously, emphasizing that poultry and organic spice farming remain profitable ventures that can secure long-term income.

Resource person Hauwa’u Inuwa highlighted the economic potential of organic produce, urging participants to fully utilize the knowledge and materials provided.

“This business is highly beneficial and can generate substantial income for families,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Migrate Hamman and Khadija Umar expressed gratitude to Dr. Durkwa for the support.

Khadija Umar appealed to other well-meaning individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture, describing the initiative as a lifeline for women seeking financial empowerment.

Each of the 50 women received a starter pack comprising turmeric, ginger, and garlic seeds, along with sack, hand gloves to support hygienic processing and planting.

The empowerment programme aligns with broader efforts to strengthen women’s participation in agriculture and promote home-based agribusiness as a tool for poverty reduction and food security in the state.
