The Adamawa State Agribusiness Support Programme (ADASP) has partnered with the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) to strengthen the capacity of stakeholders in sugarcane production through a specialized training programme on Basic Sugarcane Agronomy and Variety Selection.

The five-day residential training, held at the National Sugar Institute (NSI) in Ilorin, Kwara State, equipped participants with practical knowledge on modern sugarcane cultivation, improved variety selection, field establishment, crop management, and best agronomic practices required to enhance productivity and profitability.

The programme, themed “From Sett to Harvest,” provided participants with a comprehensive workbook and practical field planning guide aimed at supporting the establishment and management of productive sugarcane farms.

ADAS-P was represented at the training by its Lead Consultant and Chief Operating Officer, Alh. Yunusa Ibrahim Gafai, alongside Christiana Madwate, who showcased the programme’s innovative agribusiness initiatives and intervention models aimed at transforming agriculture in Adamawa State. Their presentations highlighted ADASP’s commitment to value chain development, agribusiness commercialization, capacity building, and the adoption of modern agricultural practices capable of attracting investment and creating sustainable livelihoods for farmers.

Speaking on the significance of the training, ADASP noted that the partnership aligns with its mandate of promoting commercial agriculture, improving farmers’ productivity, and attracting investment into high-value agricultural commodities across Adamawa State.

The programme is also expected to support the Federal Government’s drive toward achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production by equipping participants with the technical skills needed to expand sugarcane cultivation and strengthen the sugar value chain.

ADASP reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant institutions and development partners to build the capacity of farmers and agribusiness stakeholders, thereby creating sustainable economic opportunities and improving livelihoods in Adamawa Stata.
