Police, NBA Forge Unity Over Tinted Glass Law — Enforcement Temporarily Suspended

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the rule of law and stakeholder collaboration as he received a high-powered delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The engagement centred on the ongoing enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, which has recently stirred public debate and legal scrutiny.

Both institutions held what was described as a “constructive and robust” dialogue aimed at promoting mutual understanding and ensuring law enforcement is carried out within the bounds of legality and fairness.

Following the meeting, the Police announced a temporary suspension of the enforcement of the tinted glass law, pending the outcome of a court hearing scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.

In a statement signed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Force Public Relations Officer, the IGP clarified that while there is currently no court order halting enforcement, the suspension was introduced as a gesture of respect to the NBA and in the interest of the Nigerian public.

To institutionalize collaboration, the meeting also birthed a joint Police-NBA Committee tasked with deepening engagement between the Force and the legal community on justice administration and citizens’ rights.

IGP Egbetokun emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to enforcing all extant laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for human rights, while fostering constructive relationships with key stakeholders in the justice sector.

Meanwhile, motorists and vehicle owners have been advised to use this period to regularize their documents and ensure compliance with all legal provisions governing tinted or shaded vehicle glasses in the country.
